The Mercy and Truth Medical Missions 4th Annual Charity Golf Classic was held on July 26, 2010 at Falcon Lakes Golf Course. More than 8 teams with 6 sponsors made up the tournament field raising money to support Mercy and Truth Medical Missions’ local clinics and International Medical Missions. More than $8,000 was raised as golfers competed on the course in a four man scramble format. Participants could purchase incentives for their on-course score such as Mulligans, a Yard of String, extra drives…etc. The low score of the day came from the Team sponsored by Humana insurance. Shooting a ridiculously low 21 under par 51 the team from Humana Insurance edged out the second place team from Power Group with a score of 19 under par 53. Rounding out third place with a score of 16 under par 56 was the Hayes Company who placed second in the 2009 tournament. Each participant of these three teams received a plaque with an authentic Kenyan wood carving from one of the sites MTMM visits in its International Medical Missions.

After the tournament was over, many participants bid in the silent auction for great sports and movie memorabilia. Of the 15 items available for bidding, 13 were purchased helping MTMM in the process. More than 20 prizes were then given away to Participants of the tournament for attending. These prizes included Movie Tickets, an MP4 player, dozens of Golf Balls, and a brand new set of Callaway X-20 Irons. A new Driver, two wedges, a Fairway Wood, and a putter were given to the winners of the longest drive, closest to the pin, straightest drive, and longest putt contests.

However, the real goal of the tournament was met when these teams and sponsors listened to a presentation about Mercy and Truth. Each participant learned just a little more about what Mercy and Truth does and whom it serves. As a result, we now have more than 30 new advocates for the patients we serve and the countries we visit. This in and of itself makes the entire day a success. We’ve sent 5 teams to four different locations around the globe thus far in 2010. In Mexico, University of Kansas School of Nursing students took care of a remote village by treating their people and their pets with preventative care and education. In Haiti, we helped Port-au-Prince begin its recovery from the earthquake that shook the city from its feet. In Maai Mahiu, Kenya with the help of a partnering organization known as “Kansas to Kenya”, a community team helped a local school focus more on nutritional education, began a Garden and Poultry project, helped provide desks for the school, and sought better relations between the churches here in the State of Kansas and churches in Kenya. The medical team which arrived 5 days after the community team left, treated almost 1200 people in 4 ½ clinic days while educating the people’s of Maai Mahiu about the benefits of living a healthier life. In Mombassa, Kenya 11 students from the University of Louisville Medical School, 2 nurses from Kansas, and a Doctor from Nigeria are tending to children of an 2 orphanages, providing a clinic in two remote villages, and working alongside Kenyan doctors in a hospital 1 ½ hrs away from where they are staying.

It has truly been an exciting year thus far and 2011 proves to be an even more exciting year with more trips than ever as we seek to fulfill God’s calling in our organization. Updates to the blog will be done no less than weekly, and with the help of improving technology we hope to soon have daily blogs from team leaders as they serve the peoples of the nations they have been called too.
